Caribbean Basketball Networks Old School Gold - MyChal Thompson
The leader of the new school. The first in the pool. With the first pick in the first round of the 1978 NBA Draft one Portland General manager chose…. Ahead of West Texas’ finest (Maurice Cheeks), ahead of the Wildman from Wyoming (Michael Ray Richardson), ahead of Arkansas’ head hog (Ron Brewer), ahead of UNLV All American (Reggie Theus), ahead of the epitome (UNC’s Phil Ford) and ahead of the Hick from French Lick (Larry Bird);…One GM chose to start the international invasion. Not the Beatles, not the Stones, it was for him whom the “sweet bell” tolled. From Nassau, Bahamas, by way of Miami Jackson Hs and the University of Minnesota, Mychal Thompson’s selection symbolized a movement some 30 years before its time. Fittingly enough was the fact that he was selected by the aptly entitled franchise, The Portland Trailblazers.
Mychal “Sweet Bells” Thompson is one of the elite of amongst one of the elitist fraternities ever. NBA number one pick. Ever!! Caribbean Basketball Networks got a hold of the former NBA player and Current Lakers Radio Color Commentator, Why? So you could bear witness to Genius. The Frenzy

Recently, the basketball Mecca of the universe, has turned its attention to the Caribbean, among other countries to get talented young prospects into the american system in hopes of grooming them for future success. It’s much like the elapsing of markets syndrome experienced by bigger wider known brands I.e. The Coke and Pepsi, Nike and Adidas lines and their market share stake in America. So in the sense of good business all entities must look outside of it borders to continue to feed the machine which exist. So with the attention being turned elsewhere and little or no structure being set up to receive such attention where the attention is being given; frenzy ensues and questions of credibility arise and linger greatly. This is for external representatives and individuals looking at the Caribbean for talented young prospects, events and/or coaches; here is how you wade through “The Extras” and get to the heart of the matter.

Caribbean Basketball Networks Players Edge © Former Milwaukee Bucks Trainer Mike Jelich

Professional Trainer and Coach Mke Jelich , owner and founder of NUbody, Inc., said he was doing some jogging one day and he had a visualization as he was about to start runnin up a steep hill. Jelich says “The crazy idea popped into his head, that maybe professional teams and athletes would improve their performance if they had a personal trainer on staff.” Mr. Jelich, a workout fiend himself, was so blown and inspired by this idea that he stopped, ran home and started right away at weaving together his ideas into a presentation and a business plan. After a meeting with some of the executives of the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, the next day they returned his call, snapped some pictures and it was official, Mike Jelich was the first personal strength and conditioning coach for the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks franchise. As they say, the rest is history.

Bahamian year in basketball: Collegiate Edition
Basketball in the Bahamas is fast becoming one of the stalwarts and most successful sports that the tiny island nation exports. Colleges and universities around the United States and even farther away are fast realizing the need for the prototypical Bahamian player. In yesteryears Bahamians were basically only placed on collegiate teams because of their tenacity, athleticism or size, but today the styles of play that Bahamian collegiate Players exhibit is very diverse. The of Pioneers of “The Bahamian Collegiate Basketball era”; players like Mychal Thompson (University of Minnesota), Cecil Rose (University of Houston), Osborne Lockhart (University of Houston), Sharon “The General” Storr (St. John’s University), Peter “Macaroni” Gilcud (University of Minnesota), Gordon “Slanks” Musgrove (St. Gregory’s), Uhlrich “Rick” Fox (university of North Carolina), Craig ” Magic” and “Price Buster” Walkine, Quentin “Three ounce” Hall (Gonzaga) and Scott “Jumpman” Forbes (Florida International), just to name a few…

Leonardo Lightbourne - Player’s Edge
At every stop of evaluation, Leonardo lightbourne was almost always considered one of the better talents not only in his age group but to come out of the Bahamas in the past ten years. The rangy 6′7 athletic freak, (a Darius miles clone with less hype) has paid his dues to the game through practice and hardwork….needless to say “his talent has always made way for him”. (more…)

Player’s Edge -Player, Trainer and Coach Mark Hanna
The player’s edge with strength and conditioning guru - coach Mark Hanna, who at the ripe old age of 35, is still often mentioned in almost every conversation that is held when people are discussing who is arguably the best player in this Bahamas today.
Mark Hanna’s basketball career started late by most standards, as he did not play basketball until he came to LW young as a twelfth grader from Eleuthera. This however did not stop the young Hanna from making his mark when he did play. (more…)

Shavonder Clarke was a trendsetter…her basketball career and exploits when compiled is a list of hard to match feats and first…most of all it was done with finesse.
Clarke, a 5′11 post/guard hybrid started out in relatively under-developed Exuma island in the Bahamas. Despite the limitations to the islands’ overall infrastructure, Clarke still earned a full basketball scholarship to then nationally ranked Miami Dade juco from tiny L.N.Coakley Hs (Exuma island’s only high school).
Experiencing limited minutes her freshman year because of a stress fracture in her foot and having to adjust to the drastic changes of home and the United States (she still managed to average 4 points and 5 rebounds per game). As the season came to a close, Clarke seriously considered coming home and calling it quits. That summer Clarke was revived and stepped up her discipline and training; so much so that the next three years of basketball was “cake”. (more…)
